Lake Amistad
Originally named San Felipe del Rio by Spanish missionaries in the early 1600s, the name was shortened to Del Rio with the establishment of the first Post Office in 1883. The San Felipe Springs still bears the name and its creeks and canals flow generously through several delightful city parks and recreation areas.
Ciudad Acuña, in the state of Coahuila, Mexico, sits directly across the Rio Grande and the sister cities share celebrations throughout the year. Fiesta de Amistad celebrates the friendship between the U.S. and Mexico and features the world’s only parade that crosses the border of two nations.
A Texas Main Street City, Del Rio is home to many historic buildings, including Val Verde County Courthouse, a renovated theater, and a variety of downtown shops. The monthly “Best of the Border” events include a First Friday Art Walk—an open house of the city’s numerous galleries—and a downtown First Saturday Market Day (February-December).
