Van Horn traces its roots to the scarcity of water in the vast desert land of the wild west of the 1800s. Major Jefferson Van Horne discovered the Van Horn Wells in 1849, but the town was named for Lieutenant James Judson Van Horn who commanded the Army Garrison at the Wells from 1859 to 1861. He was later captured and held captive for a year by Confederate troops who seized the post during the Civil War.

The town of Van Horn was formed some two decades later when the Texas and Pacific Railroad was completed in 1881, the same year that the last Indian battle was fought in Texas at Victorio Canyon just north of town. Van Horn has remained a watering hole for a constant stream of travelers who today can stop, stay and enjoy the small town atmosphere amid the scenic beauty and beautiful sunsets of 11 surrounding mountain ranges.

Located at the crossroads of the Texas Mountain Trail, Van Horn is an excellent location to base your travels through the scenic mountains of West Texas. Stop by the Van Horn Convention Center and Visitors’ Bureau for tips on day trips to such sights as Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, Hueco Tanks State Historic Site and the Davis Mountains.
